The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
