Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
