The Game's Rolling Dodge Merits Praise
If you've played the popular action RPG, or just about any 3D action game, you're likely acquainted with the fantastic feature referred to as the “evasion roll.” This avoidance maneuver enables your hero to execute a forward, sideways, or backward somersault to evade all incoming damage and gain space from opponents. Appears practical, doesn't it?
This rolling move, however, has received plenty of criticism, not simply because of the rolling; it's been labeled dumb, a cop-out, and an unbelievable technique — and in some cases, I agree. Just imagine me somersaulting past hostile mobs in a well-known fantasy game — can't touch this Geralt! But the title's dodge roll represents the evasion to outdo all previous rolling dodges, and here's the reason.
For this particular game, the developers found an excellent method to address all opinions suggesting the technique is not challenging enough: merely bestow all foes excessive power, triple that, and all heroes who ventures close them will appreciate deeply for their dodge-roll ability, myself included. When the stakes are this high, evading successfully comes across as a triumph, rather than a cheap trick.
No alternative avoidance technique in Elden Ring comes close to this sense of satisfaction and reliability, because swift moves offer limited distance and blocking attempts are easily broken by powerful foes. Someone once recommended jumping as a go-to Elden Ring avoidance strategy, but besides failing to offer optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit could enhance my odds of beating enemies (lack of skill, maybe).
Perfecting the Skill
Although this evasion move provides relief in an otherwise brutal game, it demands ability. First of all, Elden Ring's dodge roll merely initiates a frame of protection following you let go of the evasion key, which prevents a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dire situations. Moreover, while it might transport you away from enemies, it's much better to employ it as a chance to get closer, preferably behind the opponent, and strike blows. Lastly, it remains necessary to comprehend and predict foe assaults, because rolling prematurely of an extended wind-up may end your invincibility prior to the hit connecting… resulting in severe damage.
A Well-Designed Feature
Even though rolling-dodging in rapid sequence might seem rather absurd (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't practically possible in the game. Of course, that still doesn't make it a realistic battle technique — exactly the reason it would be pure horror to witness it in a title like a historical simulation — yet we're discussing a spectacular magical game being considered, therefore, it doesn't matter?
Similar to any respectable evasion move, the game's dodge motion is improved by a brief tumbling leap at the start, giving it an energetic feel as opposed to plopping the player onto the ground. According to your loadout, the move can feel incredibly quick or relatively slow, however, it's consistently quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges used in the previous titles. Admittedly, you may embed your big blade into the ground when wielding such equipment, but that's your own fault for avoiding ranged weapons (In jest — steer clear of the game with a crossbow).
Ideal Equilibrium
The game's dodging mechanic forms an optimal harmony between challenge and opportunity, granting chances of triumph while risking the loss of that hope at the slightest mistake. Learn this skill, and you'll gain not just victory, but fulfillment.
