During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an bold start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
